Weigh filler cleaning and product changeover.

A structured approach to line clearance, safe access, retained-product inspection, cleaning, reassembly and first-off verification for dry-product weighing systems.

Method selection

Choose the cleaning process from the product and risk, not a generic promise.

Dry brushing, vacuum extraction, wipe-down, removable-part washing or a validated wet-cleaning method can each be appropriate in different applications. The product safety data, allergen policy, dust characteristics, hygiene standard and machine design determine the acceptable method.

A cleaning plan should define the product boundary, isolation steps, tools, detergents where permitted, inspection points, drying requirement, reassembly checks and release authority. Water or compressed air should not be introduced simply because they are available.

Changeover sequence

Control the handover from the final pack of one run to the first pack of the next.

Separating line clearance, cleaning and process verification reduces the chance that retained product, an incorrect recipe or a misplaced component reaches the next batch.

1. Clear

Stop feed and account for product.

Complete or safely remove remaining material, identify work in progress and clear packs, labels, film, codes and documents from the previous run.

2. Clean

Reach every defined product path.

Isolate safely, remove approved contact parts and clean hoppers, feeders, weigh hoppers, timing hoppers, chutes, clamps and spill areas using the agreed method.

3. Release

Reassemble and prove the next setup.

Check fasteners, seals, sensors, load-cell freedom, guards, recipe, target and first-off packs before production is released.

Product-retention points

Inspect where material can bridge, smear, bounce or sit out of sight.

  • Hopper corners, covers, level sensors and feeder inlets.
  • Vibratory pans, auger tubes, screws, funnels and product ledges.
  • Weigh-hopper doors, seals, pivots and adjacent load-cell structures.
  • Timing hoppers, forming tubes, discharge socks and bag clamps.
  • Conveyor frames, guards, cable trays and surfaces beneath the product path.
  • Static-control, dust-extraction and reject areas connected to the line.

Cleaning access should be assessed with the real operator, tools and personal protective equipment. A part that can be removed in a demonstration may still be impractical if it is heavy, awkward or lacks a safe handling position.

Protect the weighing system.

Load cells and their mountings can be affected by impact, overload, liquid ingress, cable damage or a component reassembled in contact with the frame. Cleaning instructions should identify protected areas and the correct support for removable hoppers and chutes.

After reassembly, confirm that each weighing assembly returns to a stable zero and moves freely without touching guards, discharge chutes or cables.

Design questions for a new machine.

  • Which parts require tools and which can be removed by hand?
  • Where will removed product-contact parts be carried, washed, dried and stored?
  • Are lifting aids required for hoppers, formers or screws?
  • Can the operator inspect both sides of gates, doors and seals?
  • How is dust captured without contaminating weighing components?
  • Which materials and seals are compatible with the approved cleaning agents?
  • How is correct reassembly confirmed before first-off production?
  • What changeover time must be demonstrated during acceptance testing?

Specify cleaning and changeover before the machine layout is fixed.

Cleaning questions

Questions for production and quality teams.

Is dry cleaning always best for powder?

No. The approved method depends on product hazard, hygiene, allergen and cross-contamination requirements, as well as the machine materials and design. The process should be determined from a competent site-specific assessment.

Can compressed air be used?

Only where the site method permits it and the resulting dust, product spread and exposure are controlled. Unmanaged blowing can move contamination into guards, electrical areas and the wider room.

Why check zero after cleaning?

Reassembled parts, trapped product, cable strain or physical contact can load the weighing assembly and create an offset or unstable reading.

Should cleaning time be part of the purchase decision?

Yes. Access, part handling, drying and first-off verification can affect available production time and the number of practical daily changeovers.

Can one generic procedure cover every product?

Only when the site risk assessment supports it. Allergens, hazardous dust, colour carryover, odour, moisture sensitivity and microbiological risk can require different controls.
