The mean does not describe the whole process.
Two runs can have the same mean but very different variation. Record consecutive results and calculate sample standard deviation, minimum, maximum and any pack outside the agreed band. A process with high variation may need a higher target to protect the lower tail.
Separate product intentionally placed in packs from spill, residue, rejects, start-up loss and material left in the machine. These losses need their own measurement.
Build the input from an agreed production sample.
- Define net weight. Use a consistent tare method and a suitable reference scale.
- Choose a stable period. Include normal product condition, hopper refill and operator or automatic handling.
- Record consecutive packs. Do not select only results close to target.
- Separate accepted and rejected packs. Keep both in the process record even if the calculator uses accepted packs.
- Calculate the measured mean. Retain the sample size, standard deviation, minimum and maximum with it.
- Use the actual material value. State whether the cost includes only raw product or other relevant value.
- Repeat after a controlled improvement. Compare like-for-like product, target, pack and production conditions.
What to investigate when giveaway is high.
- Target set above the necessary process or regulatory requirement.
- High variation forcing a protective over-target bias.
- Feed overrun or product still in flight after the feeder stops.
- Changing hopper level, bulk density, moisture or product size.
- Unstable zero, tare error or mechanical contact on the weighing system.
- Delayed or incorrectly mapped checkweigher feedback.
- Spill, residue, rejects and start-up loss counted as filler giveaway.

How to interpret the result.
Is every gram above target avoidable giveaway?
No. The appropriate target depends on process variation, product and pack requirements and any applicable packaged-goods rules. The calculator shows mean difference, not the legally or technically removable amount.
What does a negative result mean?
The sample mean is below target. That should trigger a review of individual results, tare and compliance rather than being treated as a cost saving.
Should rejected packs be included?
Use accepted packs for the displayed run estimate, but record rejected packs and their product separately because they are part of total process loss.
Can this replace a statistical process review?
No. It does not calculate standard deviation, confidence, control limits or legal conformity. Use the full consecutive result set for engineering and quality decisions.
